Math Placement Process
Below, you will find a brief description of how recommendations will be made for 8th Grade Math. Students who meet at least 4 of the following 5 criteria will be recommended for the accelerated math program; Students who do not meet 4 of the 5 criteria will proceed with the traditional math course.
- MCAS Data: Minimum average of 500 for Grade 5 and 6 Math MCAS
- Quiz & Test Average: 88% or greater before revisions/bonus points/retakes
- iReady Score: 530 or greater on January test
- 8th Grade Placement Test: Score of 88% or higher. Test traditionally given the last week of February
- Teacher Recommendation based on effort, procedural fluency, attention to detail, level of independence, work pace.
The accelerated course covers 8th grade mathematics standards, as well as Algebra I standards. This makes for a very rigorous course. The traditional Math 8 course covers only 8th grade standards. If a student does not qualify for accelerated math next year, they will still have opportunities to take honors level courses in subsequent years, and will still have the ability to reach Calculus should they so desire.
